Warm royal welcome despite drizzly weather

Duke and Duchess welcomed by Haka at Government House

Prince William and Duchess Catherine have received a Royal welcome in drizzly conditions at Government House.

The couple, as well as Prince George, were greeted by Prime Minister John Key when they touched down in Wellington just after midday in a Royal New Zealand Air Force plane.

However, Prince George was not there when the Royal couple were welcomed at Government House with a haka performed on the lawn by students from Wellington's Rongotai College.

The couple appeared relaxed and happily chatted with Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae and his wife.

They both huddled under black umbrellas as they greeted a group of school children waiting on the lawn. Catherine, dressed in a red dress and coat and matching box hat, was given a bunch of flowers which she then passed on to an aide.

Prince William could then be heard laughing with the Governor General as they made their way up the steps of Government House.

Fern brooch

The Duchess' outfit was by Catherine Walker, which she adorned with a New Zealand fern brooch given to the Queen during her 1953/54 world tour. The diamond and platinum brooch was a Christmas gift from the women of Auckland. She also wore a hat by Gina Foster.

It was a change from the outfit she was photographed wearing in Sydney just hours earlier. Prince George also changed into a cream outfit in-flight.

Catherine looked fresh and relaxed as she emerged from the plane, and she managed to escape an embarrassing moment when her dress and coat billowed in the wind.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son were greeted on the tarmac by Mr Key and his wife Bronagh, a representative from the Governor-General's office and Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

The party then left in a motorcade which was to drive along Oriental Parade to Government House.

The Royals have had a damp start to their 10-day tour of New Zealand. While crowds of well-wishers gave them a warm welcome, the weather had other plans, with low cloud with occasional rain or drizzle forecast for the capital today, and a strengthening southerly set to bring a chill across the country.

Prince William has visited New Zealand four times in the past, but it will be the Duchess of Cambridge's first visit to the country, and her son's first overseas trip.
