There has been a serious road incident in the North Waikato this afternoon, the New Zealand Transport Agency has advised.
A small stretch of State Highway 2, west of the intersection with State Highway 25, is closed to eastbound traffic.
Motorists heading to the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty or South Waikato, from Auckland, are being advised to delay their New Year's Eve journey as traffic starts to build up heading east to the Coromandel Peninsula.
Motorists that can't delay their trip, have been advised to use Steen Road as an alternative route.
The NZTA are also asking that motorists drive with caution and patience.
