The Duke of Cambridge has unveiled a portrait of his grandmother at a State Dinner at Government House, on Thursday night.

The three-quarter length portrait by New Zealand artist Nick Cuthell was unveiled in front of the Duchess of Cambridge, as well as the Prime Minister and dignitaries.

In the portrait, the Queen is depicted standing wearing a royal blue dress, bright red lipstick a three-stand pearl necklace. She is also wearing a silver fern broach believed to be the same piece Duchess of Cambridge donned when she arrived in New Zealand three days ago.

Mr Cuthell travelled to London and spent an hour with the Queen, who sat for photographs and his initial sketch in Buckingham Palace's Yellow Drawing Room.

He told ONE News it was a dream come to true to paint the Queen.

"Her majesty is a busy woman, so to get an hour with her was great."

"It's literally a dream come true for me. And I'm thrilled that it's going to be hanging here in the New Zealand Portrait Gallery on permanent public display.

The Cambridges are at a state dinner hosted by Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae at Government House in Wellington.

The Duchess is wearing a boat neck black with an embellished silverfern design on one shoulder. The dress is designed by one of the Duchess' favourite British designers Jenny Packham.

Earlier in the evening, the Duke sat with Labour Leader David Cunliffe and then Prime Minister John Key infront of the world's media.
