A parent invited to Wellington's most exclusive playdate says young Prince George took control and "owned the place" during his first Royal official engagement.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son attended an informal Plunket meeting at Government House in Wellington this afternoon with a group of babies and their parents.
Grant Collinge, his partner Magda and their son Lucas, were one of 10 families invited to the playdate organised by Plunket.
Mr Collinge says eight-month-old Prince George is his "own little man".
"He sort of took control went into the middle of the circle, hunted out the biggest toy, propped himself up, and he owned the place basically," he told ONE News.
"He's bubbly, a little bit feisty too but a very friendly baby."
Mr Collinge took the opportunity to gets some tips from Prince William about long-haul travelling with young babies and also had the chance to have a "good, casual" conversation with the Duchess.
The young prince, wearing a white t-shirt and blue overalls, was carried in his mother's arms as he met the other babies invited to attend the exclusive playdate. He appeared relaxed and happy even as his other playmates had the occasional crying fit.
He was then left to crawl around and play with toys set up for the group, however, he never strayed too far from his mother who sat at the edge of the circle.
The Duchess appeared rested after her two-day stay in southern Wairarapa, wearing a black and white short-sleeved dress and black pumps.
Nearby, Prince William happily chatted with parents, leaving his glamourous wife and eight-month-old son in the spotlight.
Plunket chose 10 sets of first-time parents who have babies who are around the same age as George and are a mix of ethnicities.
Air Force family on 'common ground' with Royals
An engineer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Mark Stevens and his wife Jenny and daughter Paige are among those attending the Plunket meeting.
Jenny thinks she and her husband will have some common ground with the Royals.
"We've already taken her back to the UK so I imagine one of the topics of conversation will be travelling with a very young baby and just how difficult it can be."
World's media highlight playdate family
Several international media headlines have highlighted that a gay couple were among the parents at the playdate.
Jared Mullen his partner Ryan Tunstall and their daughter Isabella were one of the ten families invited to the plunked playgroup.
It follows the passing of the controversial same-sex marriage bill that allows British and Welsh gay couples to wed.
