Residents across the North Island were awakened by an widely felt 5.1 magnitude earthquake this morning.
Nearly 2500 people have submitted felt reports to Geonet for the quake that hit at 6.47am this morning, centred 25 km south-west of Rotorua.
Though described as "weak" and at a depth of 167 km by Geonet, the quake was widely-felt from Tauranga to Wellington, including on the East Coast.
Chris Burn, a radio host on The Breeze Manawatū, felt the quake on the first floor of the MediaWorks Radio building in Palmerston North.
"It felt like a truck driving past," he said on his radio show.
