
Social media site Facebook is back online after crashing worldwide.
Instagram had also crashed, as had dating app Tinder. The sites were down for about 40 minutes.
During the outage, a message on Facebook said it was working on fixing the issue.
"Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can," Facebook said.
Shortly before 8pm, Instagram said on its Twitter account: "We're aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience."
Distraught users of Facebook, which has about 1.25 billion users, turned to rival site Twitter to humourously vent their distress.
Using the hashtag #facebookdown, FoxFM Melbourne wrote: "HELP @facebook is down! I can't keep breathing into this paper bag HOW DO I COMMUNICATE WITH THE WORLD #facebookdown".
Kyle Clark wrote: "Facebook is down. My wife says we should "talk to each other." Need advice fast. #facebookdown"
And Bonnie Burns wrote: "With Facebook down, I was able to finally find the missing socks to complete the pairs."
However, Totes McGotes posted: "If Facebook and Instagram being down somehow interrupts your life in any way, you need to re-evaluate."
Companies were quick to pounce on the opportunity to promote themselves on Twitter.
Tourism Fiji said that with Facebook being down, there was more time "daydream about Fiji" and posted a link to its best resorts.
And Devils Peak, a South African brewery, posted: "In case you were wondering, Facebook and Instagram are down. Have a breakfast beer instead" with a hashtag of Cheers.
