Prime Television's local detective series The Brokenwood Mysteries will return to television screens next year, after New Zealand On Air has agreed to fund a second series of the South Pacific Pictures-produced show.
NZ On Air have backed four two-hour episodes with $4,036,000 in its latest funding round.
NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson cited "social media chatter" about the first season, irrespective of viewer numbers, as a reason for financing a further block of the murder mystery programmes.
"Fans of the first series of The Brokenwood Mysteries will be thrilled to see Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd's return for a second series of the murder mystery show on Prime. The first series had a very appreciative audience who, judging by social media chatter, were left wanting more."
"We are delighted to support another season of The Brokenwood Mysteries. The first season was gorgeously quirky, quintessentially Kiwi, and its audience loved it," said Wrightson.
South Pacific Pictures producer Chris Bailey can't wait to start filming the second season.
"We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to produce another series of The Brokenwood Mysteries for Prime. The network has been really supportive of this show and we also received terrific feedback from viewers who simply loved the series. We can’t wait to create a bunch more mysteries for Detectives Shepherd and Sims to solve next year," said Bailey.
The new episodes will go into pre-production in March 2015 for an 11-week shoot which will commence in May.
The first series of The Brokenwood Mysteries aired on Prime Television over four weeks in September and October this year.
Two ideal Christmas presents for Brokenwood fans were released on December 11.
A season one DVD, featuring all four two-hour episodes of The Brokenwood Mysteries and the show's official soundtrack, which features 2014 Silver Scroll winner Tami Neilson along with many other top Kiwi country, blues and alternative rock artists, are on sale now.
The DVD is available to purchase from The Warehouse, JB Hi-Fi and Mighty Ape. The soundtrack can be purchased through iTunes.
