Police have named the two people who died after their car crashed off a single-lane bridge into the Wanganui River on the West Coast on Tuesday.

They were Chilyoung Kim and Young-Mo Sang, both aged 59, from Seoul in South Korea.

The couple had been in New Zealand for two days before the crash.

Police say family members arrived in New Zealand today and have completed the formal identification.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

The red Toyota Corolla rental car crashed into the swollen river north of Hari Hari around 4.30pm on Tuesday as it travelled south on State Highway 6.

Rescuers battled atrocious weather conditions as they tried to retrieve debris and determine how many people were in the car after reports it had up to four occupants.

When the car was pulled out of the river yesterday after its level receded, the bodies of the two tourists were found inside.

The bodies were taken to Christchurch for formal identification.
