Whakatane still country's sunniest spot

NIWA statistics report Whakatane is still New Zealand's sunniest location

Whakatane.

Whakatane is the sunniest spot in New Zealand, according to climate report statistics.

The National Institute of Weather and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) showed the Bay of Plenty town clocked up 2704 hours of sunshine in 2014, while New Plymouth came in second with 2633 hours, and Blenheim third with 2528 hours.

Whakatane was also in the top spot last year, ahead of New Plymouth and Gisborne.

The statistics did not include December 31, but one day would make no difference to the result, liaison scientist at Plant and Food Research Blenheim Rob Agnew said.

He said the region's rainfall of 131.4 millimetres recorded from July to December was the lowest in that period for the 85 years from 1930.

Nelson, typically thought of as a destination for sunshine, was back in fifth place.
