Traffic mayhem is hitting motorists attempting to flee Auckland for the beaches of Northland.
Police and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) are warning of traffic delays on the Northern Motorway between Orewa and Wellsford, north of Auckland.
Traffic was bumper to bumper between Puhoi and Hatfields Beach, police said.
NZTA said there is heavy congestion between Orewa and Warkworth and also heading Northbound into Wellsford.
Major delays are to be expected, NZTA have reported, with State Highway 16 through Helensville and Kaukapakapa recommended as an alternative route.
This may come as no surprise to motorists who were last week warned to expect delays on the popular holiday route.
Today is predicted to be the worst day for congestion, with heavy traffic estimated to last until 7pm on the Northern Gateway.
Don't expect much improvement tomorrow as delays are being picked for between 9am and 5pm.
The Northern Gateway has been highlighted as one of the worst spots for traffic delays during the holiday period.
The Kāpiti Coast north of Wellington, on State Highway 1 near Ōtaki, was also notorious for holiday traffic jams.
In the South Island, problems often struck Waimakariri on SH1 between Christchurch and Kaiapoi, and the road to Ashburton.
