After a year-long social media battle between towns across New Zealand, Dunedin has been crowned the ultimate winner of the Gigatown competition.

Toppling finalists Gisborne, Nelson, Timaru and Wanaka, the scarfie-student-town will now enjoy the most high-speed-internet in the country.

The prize package includes 1 Gigabit per second (1Gbps) internet services for three years at cheap pricing and up to $700,000 for business and community projects to harness it.

Chorus, who manufactured the competition, expects the prize will help turn Dunedin into an internet hub, joining the ranks of only a few other places in the world to have a 1Gbps fibre network including Singapore and Chattanooga, Tennessee in the US.

Communications Minister Amy Adams announced the winner at a special event in Wellington tonight in front of representatives from each of the top five towns.
