A 4.9 magnitude quake this morning has been felt around the lower North Island.

Following a review from GeoNet, the quake was "moderate" and centred 10km east of Eketahuna. The quake woke many residents as they told the Manawatū Standard on Facebook.

Over 2000 people from the Lower North Island and some in the South Island, have submitted 'felt reports' on GeoNet.

On the Manawatū Standard Facebook page several people reported that they had felt the jolt.

Mother Kat Parlane said her under-5's felt the quake. "My 2 under 5s freaked. Drop Cover Hold. Miss 4 was amazing. Big jolts in Aokautere".

Sharon Crooks said it was "A shakey start to the day in Pahiatua!".

Vanessa Ingram felt the quake in Feilding.

Eketahuna Four Square manager Tanmay Patel told The Dominion Post they heard the quake coming.

"The bottles made sounds and it was strong for a second but then it stopped. It just scared the hell out of us, we were thinking no, not again."

There was no damage to his shop but all the customers were talking about it, Patel said.

"Touch wood there is no more big ones like last time."
