More New Zealanders could find themselves renewing prescriptions and booking GP appointments online, following a push from the Government.
About 20% of general practices are using the 'Manage My Health' portal which gives patients access to medical records, prescription renewal forms, lab results and appointment booking.
Now, seven GPs from across the country have been chosen by the government as eHealth ambassadors to promote the benefits of the service to practices nationwide.
By the end of the year it's hoped half of New Zealand practices use the personalised health system.
"Patients want to know about their prescriptions, lab tests and their x-ray results and they would like to communicate with their GPs after hours. This is what that's all about," Health Minister Tony Ryall says.
Retired Wellington couple Brian and Cynthia Coomber have been trialling the service for the last five years with their GP, Dr Richard Medlicott, at Island Bay Medical Centre in Wellington.
"It really, really puts you in the box seat if you like," says Mr Coomber.
The Coombers are able to check their blood test results and request repeat scripts for medication. They can also send a message to Dr Medlicott with any health concerns.
"If it's a simple request prescription? Two clicks and it's done," Dr Medlicott says.
Any abnormal results are still followed up with a phone call or consultation.
The project is a combined investment by the Ministry of Health and the National Health IT Board.
It will cost on average up to $2,500 per practice plus on-going charges and fees of about $200 a month.
