The Aratere's temporary replacement is now out of action after its hull was damaged yesterday.
The Stena Alegra was damaged by a strong southerly while berthing in Wellington.
The ship is currently tied up on Aotea Quay for a detailed damage assessment.
KiwiRail will begin their investigation into the incident this morning and can't say how long the ferry will be out of action for.
It comes after it was revealed that the crippled Cook Strait ferry, the Aratere, was facing more problems, this time cracks to both rudders.
The troubled ferry was on the verge of being returned to the water for sea trials this week with two new propeller shafts and refurbished stabilisers, after one propeller shaft snapped in Cook Strait on a routine sailing from Picton to Wellington on November 5.
