Just ten families will have the chance to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their baby son Prince George at what will be the country's most exclusive playgroup session today.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son are due to attend an informal Plunket meeting at Government House this afternoon where they will meet with a group of babies and their parents.

Prince George is likely to be the centre of attention in what will be his first official engagement.

Plunket chose 10 sets of first-time parents who have babies who are around the same age as George and are a mix of ethnicities.

An engineer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Mark Stevens and his wife Jenny and daughter Paige are among those selected.

Jenny, who emigrated to New Zealand from England after meeting her husband, told the Telegraph she received a call from Plunket's Wellington manager Tina Syme asking if they were interested in attending the meeting.

"We've already taken her back to the UK so I imagine one of the topics of conversation will be travelling with a very young baby and just how difficult it can be."

Jenny says Paige was born two days after George.

Royal officials have warned the Prince will only appear at public engagements if he is in the mood.

A limited pool of media will be granted access to the meeting.

The trio received a wet and windy welcome when they touched down in Wellington on Monday.
