Feilding's Write Price supermarket set to close after nearly 40 years service

Feilding's Write Price supermarket, located on the corner of Warwick Street and Kimbolton Road, will close after 36 years of service in the town.

One of Feilding's most popular supermarkets is set to close, Mark Wasley News has learned.

Mark Wasley News has been informed that employees of the town's Write Price supermarket were notified by the store's management yesterday that the store will be closing within months. Write Price has served the town and its residents for nearly 40 years from its warehouse-style store on the corner of Warwick Street and Kimbolton Road.

The brand, owned by the Foodstuffs co-operative, offers a no-frills philosophy to grocery shopping with discounted prices through bulk-buying from grocery suppliers. Foodstuffs also own the New World, PAK'nSAVE and Four Square supermarket brands.

Feilding will remain to be serviced by the full-service New World supermarket, which has been longly expected to move from its current Fergusson Street location to a new purpose-built store on the corner of Aorangi and Gladstone streets.

Foodstuffs originally planned to open a PAK'nSAVE supermarket on the corner of the two streets in 2013, but after significant delays, those plans were changed.

In 2015, Foodstuffs announced the site would now accommodate a New World instead.

At the time, Foodstuffs general property manager for the North Island Angela Bull said a new, modern New World would be better fit for both the site and the community and the lease on the current Fergusson Street New World was due to expire in 2017.

"Our view is that Feilding could not support a fourth supermarket and we felt that the New World is the right store to provide the community with a modern, full service, food and grocery offer," Bull told the Manawatū Standard.

The supermarket will offer a "much more spacious" experience for its customers, with more car parking available, said Bull.

Progressive Enterprises also own and operate a Countdown store in Feilding.
