A house caught ablaze in the Auckland suburb of Gulf Harbour.

A house caught ablaze in the Auckland suburb of Gulf Harbour this afternoon.

The single-storey house in Mariner Drive was well ablaze in the ten minutes it took for the first fire engine to arrive at the scene and smoke was widespread across the neighbourhood.

Four Fire and Emergency engines, police officers and additional fire personnel attended the blaze, which started at around 4pm and took about 40 minutes to extinguish.

Extensive damage was done to the roof of the house and the fire was believed to have started at the rear of the property.

Witness Meghan Parlane, 7, said there was a considerable amount of smoke when the fire commenced.

“The smoke was very thick at the start [of the fire] and you could not see the roof tiles,” she said. “The roof now has a large hole and it has caved in.”

All people in the house made it out safely, although one person was taken to hospital with chest complaints and smoke inhalation, reported Newshub.

A small presence by emergency services remains at the scene.
