Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake shakes Manawatū

Quake located 20km north-east of Pongaroa and 29km deep

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has been felt throughout the lower North Island this morning.

The quake hit at 9:09am and was centred 20km north-east of Pongaroa, a small locality in the Manawatū region, Geonet reported.

The website, which monitors geological hazards in New Zealand, also reported that the quake was of a "moderate" intensity and located at a depth of 29km.

As of publishing, less than 1000 people had submitted felt reports to Geonet. Those people that had submitted reports felt the quake in the Manawatū and Hawke's Bay region.

Mark Wasley felt the quake in Feilding.

"It was a light, smooth, shake," he said.

A few Twitter users in Palmerston North also felt quake, describing it as "little" and "short and sharp".
