American pop star Prince will put on his first show in New Zealand later this month, less than two weeks before Madonna's first show in the country.
The 57-year-old singer-songwriter, well known for his chart-topping hits When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, Little Red Corvette and Purple Rain, will perform a one night only show at Auckland's ASB Theatre on February 24.
Both being pop music icons of the 1980s, Prince and Madonna also briefly dated in 1985 and recorded the duet Love Song on Madonna's 1988 album Like a Prayer.
Madonna will give two shows at Auckland's Vector Arena, on March 5 and 6, on what will be her first visit to New Zealand.
Prince's Auckland show will follow four concerts in Melbourne and four concerts in Sydney, Australia, and all are on the latest leg of his Piano and a Microphone tour.
Tour promoter Dainty Group said the performances will be exclusive, intimate and special, with just Prince, a piano and a microphone.
"For those blessed enough to attend, everything about these exclusive performances has been carefully considered to deliver special once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
"The repertoire will be culled from Prince's vast 39-album catalogue and each performance will have a unique set list that evolves in real time, song-to-song. Fans should expect to witness special interpretations of well-known hits alongside rarely performed B-sides and new, never-before-heard material."
The surprise tour to Australia and New Zealand comes after Prince cancelled his entire European tour last November in the aftermath of the Paris terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015. He commenced his latest leg of the Piano and a Microphone tour on January 21, giving two very personal shows enjoyed by his worldwide fans, at his Paisley Park recording studio in the United States.
Tickets for the Auckland concert go on sale through Ticketmaster next Thursday at midday and Australian concert tickets go on sale next Tuesday at midday local time.
To prevent ticket scalping, tickets for all concerts in Australia and New Zealand will be limited to two per person and no tickets will be distributed.
Ticket buyers will have to produce photo identification to pick up their tickets from the venue from midday on the day of the show.
