Christmas has arrived early for drivers as Gull lowers its petrol price for a day, offering savings of up to 20 cents a litre.

The cheaper petrol is available from 7am today until midday tomorrow, only at Gull owned stations.

The price for regular 91 will be no higher than $1.599 per litre, with an average price of $1.559. Gull's 98 octane fuel, Gull Force 10, is priced no higher than $1.749 per litre, averaging $1.704.

Across all fuel companies the national price of petrol fell below $1.90 a litre last week, for the first time since February on the back of lower international prices.

Gull New Zealand general manager Dave Bodger said the company was "feeling the Christmas cheer" by offering the discounts.

"We know this can be an expensive time of year, and also that many people are filling up their tanks for summer road trips. This is our way of celebrating the festive season and thanking Kiwis for their loyalty this year," he said.

Diesel will be priced from 65.9 cents to 82.9 cents per litre, with an average price of 79.5 cents.

Motorists can save further by using Countdown supermarket fuel vouchers in conjunction with already discounted prices.
