
A strong magnitude 5.4 earthquake has been widely felt across the North Island this evening.
The quake hit at 6.42pm and was centred 35km north-east of Taihape, in a location just to the north-east of Waiouru.
At a depth of 39km, the quake was strongly felt by thousands of residents in the Wellington, Manawatū, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay regions.
It was described on Twitter as a rolling shake.
