Radio listeners in Manawatū listen to MORE FM more than any other radio station, the 2015 Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey has found.
Conducted by TNS New Zealand, the Manawatū survey released last Friday, sampled 822 people aged 10 years and over, over 6 weeks. The survey found 18,800 different people tune into MORE FM each week, followed by 17,900 different people tuning into The Edge.
When compared to the 2014 Manawatū Commercial Radio Audience Measurement Survey, MORE FM has had an increase of 2,500 different listeners each week, while The Edge is reaching 300 less different listeners each week.
According to June 2014 Statistics New Zealand estimated population data, there are approximately 95,500 people aged over 10 years in the Manawatū survey area and 75.7% listen to a commercial radio station at some time during the week.
MORE FM also has the highest market station share in the region, up 4.6% on last year, with 15.4% of all radio listeners in the region listening to the station. The Breeze is in second place, with 13.5% of all regional listeners tuning in to the station. This is an increase of 3% in The Breeze's market station share, when compared to last year.
Manawatū radio listeners also appreciate a local breakfast programme.
In the weekday breakfast timeslot (Monday-Friday 6am-9am), MORE FM's Mike West in the Morning is the region's most popular breakfast radio programme with a 18.3% share of the breakfast market. Neighbouring Burnzee on The Breeze is the second most popular, with a 13.9% share.
These radio stations are the only commercial stations that broadcast local breakfast content in the Manawatū, as well as being MediaWorks Radio Manawatū's only stations broadcasting local content in the Manawatū.
MediaWorks Radio Manawatū, who operate the MORE FM, The Edge and The Breeze stations in the region, are pleased with the results.
"These are outstanding results for MediaWorks Radio Manawatū," said Programme Director Darren Wallace.
Referring to his nickname "Grumpy Darren", which he is commonly addressed by at MediaWorks, Wallace is appreciative of the work done by his on air team.
"I might be Grumpy sometimes, but when the team pull these sort of results off, it shows our Manawatū audiences appreciate our efforts to entertain and inform them at a local level.
"We've worked really hard between surveys in reflecting our community.
"There are a lot of great stations to choose from and some big personality network shows that have big budgets and content delivered to them on a plate. To beat them all on our own turf with our two local stations, is a sensational feeling. It will spur us on to continue performing to the best of our ability," said Wallace.
MORE FM Manawatū breakfast anchor Mike West is "extremely happy" with the station's success in the survey.
"I'm extremely happy that we are number one in the face of some very strong competition," he said.
Nationally, The Edge has the most listeners tuning in each week with 437,500 different people, followed by 370,600 different people tuning into Newstalk ZB.
Newstalk ZB has the highest market station share nationally, with 12.1% of all radio listeners in New Zealand listening to the station. The Mike Hosking Breakfast is New Zealand's most popular radio programme.
