It's time to to sharpen your skates and get your winter woolies ready, as Palmerston North welcomes back the Ice World ice skating rink this June.

This winter will be the third time the ice rink has been set up in Palmerston North, after its popularity in 2012 and 2013 ensured its return.

This year, Ice World are setting up a winter wonderland environment in The Square which will involve the inclusion of the ice fun slide, which is new to New Zealand, as well as fairy lights, mood lighting and snow machines.

The slide is a 25 metre attraction where users ride a toboggan and will be set up in New Zealand for the first time. It has previously been popular at winter festivals around the world.

"We are pleased to be able to bring the ice rink back to Palmerston North," said Ice World director Craig Douglas. "The ice slide will add an extra element of entertainment and we are expecting it will draw in a big crowd."

Destination Manawatū chief executive Lance Bickford said their partnership with Ice World ensured locals had attractions through what was usually a quiet period.

"Previously the ice rink has added a real sense of excitement to The Square, during a time when we usually have fewer events. This is a great way to further expand that vibrancy again for both locals and our many visitors," said Bickford.

Ice World said the Palmerston North rink draws many people into the city's CBD and provides an enjoyable activity for all ages throughout the school holidays.

The ice rink and ice slide will run over four weeks from June 19 - July 19 and will be open daily from 9am to 9pm for public skating and group booking sessions.

Prices start from $15 for children and $20 for adults.
