Record amount raised for Halcombe School at gala

Locals spend up to support school at biennnial gala

Farmer George Bartlett takes some children for a ride on the Magic Carpet Ride at the 2015 Halcombe School gala.

People buying a variety of items from books, puzzles and toys, to plants, cakes and raffle tickets as well as spending up at the auctions, saw the Halcombe School gala last Saturday be the school's most successful yet.

Halcombe School principal Sue Simpson was 'over the moon' at raising a record $19,000 by holding the biennnial gala.

"That's $120 for every child at [our] school and has well and truly beaten our previous gala record of $13,000," she said.

"We are over the moon, as you can imagine. We have been humbled by the support we have had."

As well as the bric-a-brac, clothes and CDs and DVDs filling the school hall, there were plenty of goods for sale outside as well.

On the hot Saturday, workers selling the cold drinks, ice-blocks and 'spiders' (ice cream sodas) were kept busy with the stall having customers continuously lining up all day.

The two auctions gave local residents and visitors the chance to score some high-quality items and spend up large and support the school.

In the auction of new goods, farm supplies, processed meat, a bike and a live pig, were just some of the items being auctioned thanks to local businesses' donations.

The second-hand auction had bikes, bookcases, bedroom drawers and beds make a bid on.

A favourite at the gala, the magic carpet ride, saw riders sport some minor injuries while trying to hold onto a moving carpet being dragged behind a tractor or all-terrain vehicle. Students got revenge on their teachers, drenching them in dunk the teacher.

Simpson said the day wasn't only about the record profit, but the atmosphere.

"The atmosphere on Saturday was just awesome. Everyone had a great time and everywhere there were smiles. We had so many positive comments about the happy, friendly feeling around the school," she said.
